David Flate Artist Statement

A great friend, Pablo Santos dies way too young; weeks later having dinner with my friend, Lana Parrilla, and saw her art; those two events lead to my decision “TO PAINT”.  I phoned the art school, recommended by Lana and was placed on the wait list.  I began painting in my apartment, without knowledge or know-how or technique, but was creating paintings that spoke to me and that I had a desire to share. I paint with no plan most often and when I do have a plan it is likely that initial paint on the canvas gets cover up or becomes background.  I love movement and energy juxtaposed against containment and order.  My wish for my art is for the audience to be moved to creativity, to joy, to celebration, to a smile upon their face.
